Constitutional Policing: The Importance of Legal Education for Law Enforcement

DESCRIPTION: “Thats the way we’ve always done it” is one of the most dangerous phrases in law enforcement. In today’s world it is no longer good enough to have a basic understanding of the law. Officers are expected to know the law like a lawyer. Agencies across the country continue to pour money and resources into every kind of training except legal education. This presentation, presented by a former City Attorney and FLETC attorney advisor-instructor, will cover how Section 1983 lawsuits can wreak havoc on your agency, what Plaintiff’s attorneys look for and most importantly, what officers can do to learn the law like a lawyer and minimize exposure to these harmful lawsuits.

An Update: How to Handle sUAS/DRone Complaints

PRESENTERS: 

DESCRIPTION: The presentation will address how Sheriffs’ Offices can handle sUAS/Drone Complaints when they receive them. the two types of sUAS/Drone operators will be addressed, Recreational/Hobbyist and the Commercial Operator. Various state code and local ordinances with be discussed to assist agencies in enforcing violations by the sUAS/Drone operator. What documentation the agency can request from the operator and also what documentation they cannot ask for. THe presentation will also advise what resources are available from the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) and what can the FAA Flight Standards District Office (FSDO) and the FAA Law Enforcement Assistance Program (LEAP) can do to assist in the investigation.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  • Agencies will understand the difference between a Recreational/Hobbyist Operator and a Commercial Operator of a sUAS/Drone.
  • Agencies will see what possible State Laws and local ordinances are already in place to enforce violations by the sUAS/Drone operator.
  • Agencies will understand what resources are available through the FAA to assist in the investigation.
