Cancellation FAQs

April 17, 2020 [LAST UPDATED: April 29, 2020, at 8:06pm ET]

The National Sheriffs’ Association (NSA) announced today that because of the ongoing global pandemic, it is unable to hold its 2020 NSA Conference scheduled for June 22-25 in Tampa, FL.

“After careful consideration, we, unfortunately, are prevented from holding our 78th Annual Conference this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic,” Davidson County (TN) Sheriff and NSA President Daron Hall said. “The continued unknown effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, combined with the historic economic pressures on our communities, makes producing a conference under these circumstances impossible. Our communities are hurting, and the recovery will take time and our collective patience and focus. We look forward to welcoming members and vendors to our February 6-9, 2021 Winter Legislative and Technology Conference in Washington, DC and our Annual Conference in Phoenix, AZ, June 22-26, 2021.”

General

Why did NSA cancel the Summer Conference?

The continued unknown effects of the COVID 19 pandemic, combined with the historic economic pressures on our communities,  make producing a conference now impossible.  Our communities are hurting, and the recovery will take time and our collective patience and focus.

NSA heard from many exhibiting companies who are now operating under travel restrictions for the foreseeable future, while others expressed concern over appearing insensitive if they continued marketing to law enforcement professionals under such dire circumstances.

Did NSA look at rescheduling the Summer Conference?

We did explore options of rescheduling the conference for a later date but came to the conclusion that, given the uncertainty surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, it was impossible to produce the conference this year. We cannot predict how long our Nation’s sheriffs will be supporting their communities with the recovery process.

How will voting be handled now that there is no Summer Conference?

The NSA Board of Directors is examining several governance options and we will announce its decision in the near future. We will update this page when more information becomes available.

How will awards be handled now that there is no Summer Conference?

The awards that were to be presented at the Summer Conference will now will be presented at the February 2021 Winter Conference in Washington, DC. We will follow up with each winner at a later date with more information. Please direct all questions to Rmirmel@sheriffs.org.

How does this affect the NSA Winter Conference in February 2021 in Washington, DC?

The Winter Conference will be held as scheduled February 6-9, 2021 in Washington, DC. Additional information will be forthcoming over the next few months.

Refunds

Will NSA be issuing refunds to exhibitors/sponsors?

Exhibitors bring a wealth of products and services to the attention of our Sheriffs, and you are also the financial backbone of NSA operations. Our last communication, on April 27th, asked for Exhibitors’ patience as we explored options in addressing the COVID-19 cancellation of NSA’s flagship event. Thank you for allowing us that time.

This cancellation has caused unprecedented repercussions for NSA, including throwing the association into dire financial straits. Accordingly, we are offering the following three option for processing your Exhibit fees:

Roll Over to 2021: Many Exhibitors have offered to roll over their fees to the 2021 Annual Conference & Technology Exposition in Phoenix next summer. We are deeply grateful for that showing of support. A formal contract authorizing NSA to transfer your 2020 exhibit booth payment to 2021 can be quickly completed.

Refund: Once NSA has responses from all Exhibitors, we will follow up with the process and timeline for issuing your refund.

Donation: Some of you have already advised NSA to keep your Exhibitor payments. This is a generosity that cannot be repaid except with our deepest gratitude.

Please provide your choice via email to nsaexecutiveoffice@sheriffs.org by May 21, 2020.

All paid sponsors receive the same options for their sponsorship fees.  Please contact lhopkins@sheriffs.org with your choice by May 21st, 2020.

Can I roll my exhibitor/sponsor fees over into the 2021 Summer Conference?

We have received several inquiries as to how NSA is handling the funds that exhibitors and sponsors paid to NSA in relation to the Annual Conference.  This pandemic has placed us all in uncharted waters.  Just as with your organization, the NSA is trying to navigate these waters. As you may know, a significant portion of the exhibitor and sponsor funds were already expended prior to this outbreak to produce and promote the Annual Conference. We are working through a process to determine how to deal with this situation, and we ask for your patience for a little while longer as we explore options for making this right.   On Monday April 27th, a letter from NSA was sent to all exhibitors with this same message. To see a draft of the letter, click on this link.

Can I roll my exhibitor/sponsor fees over into the 2021 Winter Conference?

We are looking at a host of options, and we are committed to working with exhibitors to maximize their exposure to the sheriffs needing the resources and solutions these companies offer.

Will NSA be issuing registration refunds to attendees?

Upon the COVID-19 cancellation of this summer’s conference, NSA directed you to our insurance company, Rain Protection Insurance, for a refund of your Conference registration fee; but, to our shock, too, you were notified of your ineligibility for a refund. This has caused unprecedented repercussions to NSA, and we recognize that your organizations may be in similar financial desperation.  Accordingly, NSA is offering the following three options for processing your registration fee; and we request that you respond by Wednesday, May 13th, via the personal link included in the email sent to you.  If you did not receive an email or have any additional questions, please contact Julie Ann Schmidt at jschmidt@sheriffs.org.

Refund: Your registration fee will be refunded via the same method as your payment, i.e., if you paid by credit card, the card will be credited in the amount of your payment; if you paid by check, a check will be issued to the payor; etc. NSA will process refunds as quickly as possible, beginning after May 18th.

Roll Over to 2021: Your registration fee will be rolled over to the 2021 Annual Conference & Technology Exposition at the 2020 rate. NSA will process that roll over when the 2021 registration opens, and you will receive a confirmation at that time.

Donation: Some registrants, exhibitors, and sponsors have advised NSA to keep their payments. This is a generosity that cannot be repaid except with the deepest gratitude.

What do I do about my hotel reservation?

We are currently working with our hotel partners to automatically cancel reservations made in the official housing block. You will receive a confirmation of that cancellation email in the coming week.  Reservations made outside the block with the hotel or through a third party, like Expedia or Travelocity, are the responsibility of the attendee to cancel. If in doubt, please call the hotel directly to confirm your cancellation.

Please be cautious if you are contacted by any service or individual claiming to represent official  NSA housing providers. Illicit service providers unaffiliated with NSA should be reported to NSA.
